"The Mother (A Mãe, 1975) is one of Monteiro's first essays on the universe of Portuguese oral culture, folktales and obscure colloquialisms. The plot revolves around a traditional tale about theft, greed, an ubiquitous mother, and the links between the worlds of the living and the dead". Note: The film seems to end abruptly after 25 minutes, as in the original DVD. Apparently, the remaining 2 minutes are lost and this is the only extant version, rescued from degraded materials.
